Final Fever has gripped Scoil Niocláis ahead of our Sciath na Scol final! The game will be played under lights in Pairc Uí Rinn next Wednesday 16th of November. Throw in at 8.00pm.The boys have put in some brilliant performances this year so far and came through a tense play off, to secure their place in next Wednesday's showdown. The team have been preparing well- playing an exciting brand of football- under the watchful eye of team manager Mr. Moynihan and coach Mr. O'Donovan. "We are delighted with boys attitude to date", Mr. Moynihan added, " They are a fantastic group of players and I know that they will give their all to secure victory for Scoil Niocláis next week". Both men also paid tribute to all the parents who have supported the team so well throughout the campaign. With the game being played at the later time of 8.00pm we are asking that everyone will make the effort to get to Pairc Uí Rinn and support the lads on the night.Scoil Niocláis Abú!!!

A sincere thank you to all the parents who helped out with our International Celebration. Some helped out by preparing food and others visited their child's class to talk about their native country and thanks to Johanna for taking part in a bi-lingual storytelling session in the infant rooms.
We all had a fantastic day enjoying all the different foods from 17 different countries. We also enjoyed hearing all the interesting facts about different countries. Well done to all the boys and girls for helping to make the day so colourful and memorable.

A special well done to our boys under 11 relay team who won the Rionn A County Championship. Reconstitution of classes

Rationale In Scoil Niocláis, four Junior Infant classes have been enrolled in the last four years. For one reason or another, some classes have had that uneven mix of pupils. This may have been due to the gender imbalance or an usual amount of pupils with special needs, language needs or children with emotional/behavioural problem in one or two classes. If this situation was allowed to continue it would mean less teaching and learning in those particular classes for the period of their primary schooling. The aim of reconstituting/mixing the classes at senior infant level is to redress this imbalance and have even mixed ability groups across the four classes. This remixing will first take affect at the end of the 2012-2013 school year, with this year’s intake of Junior Infant pupils. The principal may, in exceptional circumstances, for educational reasons reconstitute classes again further up the school e.g. third/fourth class. It is also possible that, in a large school, children can go on to secondary school without ever having the opportunity of getting to know many of the children from their own year. The Principal and staff of Scoil Niocláis have worked out a system of reconstituting classes and the system has gained wide acceptance from Board of Management(BoM), parents and teachers. The process is time consuming, depends largely for its success on the teachers who designed it, but it is widely accepted to be very worthwhile on many fronts. This method is most suitable for a large school which has three or four classes at every level. The proposal was put initially to the BoM for approval and parents were consulted. The following are the main benefits that would flow from the annual reconstitution of classes: Children would get the opportunity over the remaining years of meeting and getting to know all the children in their own year. It is very important for the social development of each child and links into the SPHE programme It would be a good preparation for secondary school, as it would help the children to get used to change within a safe environment, and with the support of friends. When they move on to secondary school, they would have a better chance of being in the same class as children they knew well and from whom they could get support and, with whom they would find it easy to form friendships. 2. Method for Reconstituting Classes Early in the second-term, the SPHE programme has a focus on ‘Friendship’ and teachers teach a series of lessons on the importance of friends and what friendship means. At the end of this process every child fills in a personal ‘Friendship Worksheet’, where they write the names of their ‘Best friends’ and their ‘Other Friends’. Teachers keep these worksheets in case questions arise later At the start of the third-term, using these worksheets, the information from test results and teachers’ observations, each teacher divides their class into three or four co-operative learning groups of approximately 6/7 children. Each working group should have the following elements: a) A good balance of abilities according to Standardised Tests, school tests and teacher observation. b) As good a gender balance as can be achieved c) At least one or two friends for each child, with this information coming from the worksheet d) Children with educational/behavioural/emotional problems in different groups where possible, but always with some friends. The children work co-operatively in these groups for the third-term, get to know each other and get used to working together. The teacher can make some changes to these groups initially if there is good reason, but the four elements listed above must be maintained In June, the teachers come together for ‘class formation’ meetings. The first new class is formed by taking one working group from each of the four classes and putting them together. The teachers can spend a number of hours at this exercise as they debate which group will work best with which other group. Teachers know best from their own professional experience and judgement. At this stage, the classes have not been allocated to any individual teacher, so it is in everybody’s best interest to get it right Class lists are finalised at the end of this process. Children and teachers know their new classes by the end of the school year before they go on holidays This process is carried out with great care and professionalism, and that the interests of every child is carefully considered. Where this process has been initiated in other schools, children adapt to it very easily, have become very open and flexible socially. We have only seen positive results. The system will be evaluated annually by the teachers and changed slightly if this is seen to be necessary. The original method may change somewhat as fine-tuning takes place. There for the presentation of the jersies were Orla Buckley, Niamh Kelly, Fiona O'Brien and Majella Costelloe of the SNPA, along with Mr Moynihan Mr Walsh and Miss Horgan.

The following advice is for parents of children in all educational institutions, including crèches, childcare, schools, and third level institutions. Unless otherwise mentioned ‘educational institution’ applies to all of the above. We are now experiencing our annual flu season and, as had been expected, this year the predominant flu virus is the H1N1 virus also known as swine flu. We are now seeing a major rise in people attending GPs and GP out of hours services with flu like illnesses.

Is influenza dangerous?
Most people infected with the influenza virus have a mild to moderate illness, but some have more severe illness.

What are the symptoms of influenza?The symptoms of flu include:
· Temperature over 38 ºC/100.4 ºF that begins suddenly and some of
the following:
o Dry cough
o Sore throat
o Muscle aches and pains
o Headache
o Runny nose
o Severe weakness and fatigue
o Vomiting/diarrhoea (in some cases)

What are the differences between influenza and the common cold?
It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between the common cold and flu. The main difference is that the symptoms of influenza come on rapidly and are typically accompanied by muscle aches and a fever. The common cold has a more gradual onset and is associated with a runny nose and sneezing. For a full list of differences between influenza and the common cold, please see the table below.

How does influenza spread?
Flu virus spreads from person to person mainly through the coughing or sneezing of a sick person. Flu virus may also be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with the virus (for example a tissue or door handle touched by the infected person) and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

What should I do as a parent?
Two important actions to protect your family
1. Be aware of the symptoms of flu-like illness and know where to seek medical care.
See below.
2. Teach your children the following good health habits to help stop the spread of germs:
· Teach your children to cover their mouth and nose with a paper tissue when coughing or
sneezing. If no tissue is available they should cough or sneeze into the inside of their elbow.
Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
· Teach your children to use a tissue only once and dispose of it quickly and carefully (a
dustbin is fine).
· Teach your children to wash their hands frequently with soap and water. Be sure to set a
good example by doing this yourself. If they do not have access to hand washing facilities
give them alcohol hand gel to use.
· Teach your children to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth.
· Teach your children to stay at least 1 metre/3 feet away from people who are sick.
· Children who are sick should always stay home from the school. If they have influenza they
should stay away from the educational institution for 7 days from the onset of symptoms.
· Wash hard surfaces such as kitchen worktops, door handles, etc with a normal household
cleaner as the virus can live on these surfaces. Do this frequently.

What should I do if my child gets sick?
If your child gets sick with a flu-like illness as described above you should:
· Keep your child at home and away from others as much as is possible to avoid spreading
infection to others. If they are sick with flu they should stay home for 7 days from the onset
of symptoms.
· Give your child simple anti-fever medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (NB aspirin
should NOT be given to children under 16 years of age) and ensure they drink plenty of
fluids.
· If you think your child needs to see the GP because they have severe symptoms, remember
to ring your GP first.
· If your child is in a high risk group for complications of flu contact your GP, even if their
symptoms are mild (High risk groups include people with: chronic lung, heart, kidney, liver,
or neurological disease; immunosuppression (whether caused by disease or treatment);
diabetes mellitus; people aged 65 years and older; children <2years;>

Should educational institutions be doing anything to prevent the spread of influenza?

Yes, like parents, educational institutions should encourage and facilitate everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like flu including: · Children should cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. If no

tissue is available they should cough or sneeze into the inside of their elbow. Children should

use a tissue only once and dispose of it quickly and carefully (a bin is fine). This is known as

respiratory etiquette.
· Children should wash their hands frequently with soap and water.
Where soap and water is not readily available alcohol based hand gel can be used.
· Children should avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth.
· Wash hard surfaces such as kitchen worktops, door handles, etc frequently with a normal

household cleaner as the virus can live on these.
Educational institutions should put up posters on respiratory etiquette and hand hygiene and

ensure that children have access to suitable hand washing facilities. Posters can be found on the HPSC website as indicated below.

Is there a vaccine against seasonal influenza?
A vaccine is an injection which prevents a person getting a particular disease. It works by strengthening the body’s immune system. The vaccine must be given before the person is infected with the disease. The flu vaccine for the 2010-2011 influenza season covers the strains of flu that are currently known to be circulating in Ireland, including pandemic (H1N1) 2009 (swine flu) which is the predominant strain of influenza circulating at present. Vaccination is recommended for people at high risk of complications.

Who are the high risk groups that should receive seasonal influenza vaccine?
1. All those 65 years and older.
2. Adults and children over 6 months of age with any of the following: chronic illness requiring regular follow up (e.g. chronic respiratory disease including cystic fibrosis, moderate or severe asthma, chronic heart disease, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, chronic neurological disease, diabetes mellitus, haemoglobinopathies, chronic renal disease, chronic liver disease, chronic neurological disease including multiple sclerosis, hereditary and degenerative disorders of the central nervous system etc).
3. Pregnant women and women up to 6 weeks post birth who are not in a medically at risk group and who have not already received pandemic (H1N1)2009 vaccine (can be given at any stage of pregnancy). Pregnant women in medical risk groups should receive this year’s seasonal influenza vaccine whether or not they received pandemic influenza vaccine.
4. Those who are immunosuppressed due to disease or treatment including those with missing or non-functioning spleens.
5. Children and teenagers on long-term aspirin therapy.
6. Children with any condition (e.g. cognitive dysfunction, spinal cord injury, seizure disorder, or other neuromuscular disorder) that can compromise respiratory function, especially those attending special schools/ day centres.
7. Those with morbid obesity i.e. Body Mass Index ≥ 40.
8. Residents of nursing homes, old peoples’ homes and other long stay
facilities.
9. Healthcare staff including those on clinical placement. All pregnant health care workers should be encouraged to get the seasonal flu vaccine (even if they received the pandemic vaccine last year).
10. Carers who have direct patient contact.

Are there medicines to treat influenza?
Yes, there are medicines known as anti-virals that can be used to treat flu. However, as most cases of influenza will be mild, anti-viral treatment will only be necessary in a small proportion of cases. Doctors will assess each case but the following groups are the ones most likely to require treatment with anti-virals:
• Patients who appear to have severe symptoms or
• Patients who are in defined high risk groups as above.

One of our former pupils, Aoife Downey, was involved in a rare tragic accident in Frankfield last Saturday. We are deeply saddened by Aoife’s loss.

Aoife was a full of energy, a wonderfully talented athlete and was always up for great fun. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aoife’s parents Sean and Siobhan, as well as Aoife’s sisters, Caoimhe and Eadaoin.

The National Educational Psychological Service has been advising teachers in the school to help your child cope with this tragedy.

It is possible that your child may have some feelings that he/she may like to discuss with you. It is helpful to listen to your child, be supportive of them and remain calm in what can be an upsetting situation. Maintaining the normal routine will also help your child.

You can help your child by taking time to listen and encouraging them to express their feelings. It is important to give truthful information that is appropriate to their age.

If you would like to discuss any matter pertaining the recent tragic events, you may contact me and/or the deputy principal, Sheelagh O’Leary at the school.

Aoife will be lying in repose in the Church of the Incarnation, Frankfield on tomorrow Tuesday from 4.30p.m. until 6.30p.m.

It has come to our attention that especially on wet mornings our children are being placed in danger on their way to school. On the Bellevue side the practices of pulling into the school entrance as well as double parking and reversing as children are being dropped are extremely dangerous. In the Church car park please be very careful when parking and reversing and always be mindful of small children. Please do not park behind or at the side of the church when dropping and collecting children.

Dramatic Win For Scoil Niocláis !

On Tuesday the 28th of September, Scoil Niocláis played a football match in Douglas against Upper Glanmire. There was great excitement in the team because we knew this was going to tough. The game was delayed because it was raining heavily and Glanmire thought they hadn’t enough jerseys. They didn’t check but luckily they had enough. Mr Moynihan made a tactical change by putting Sam Hanley centre forward and Ross Howell in full. The captain was Conor Nash.

The match got under way and we were on top. It was very tight at the start. Brian Flahive and Aaron Moynihan dominated midfield and Colm Coakley, Sean Grace, Christian Begley, Kevin Lee, Conor Nash and Daniel Quinlan were good at the back. Adam Idah, Mark Butler, Sam Hanley, David Harrington, Ross Howell and Andrew O’ Connell were doing up front. I am not forgetting the outstanding Cian Allen in goal.

It was a very dramatic ending with only 2 points the margin at the end. Glanmire got a scorable chance and went for goal but missed. In the build-up to the free, Ross Howell was punched and the Glanmire player was sent off. It was so tight at the end Mr Moynihan and Mr O‘Donovan only making two substitutions being Cathal Kenny and Adam Coleman. It was a great game and a deserved, well-earned 3rd victory. We may have to meat these boys again!

However, we have now to concentrate on beating Carrignavar on next Tuesday 5th October at home in Douglas GAA. Roll on Carrignavar.

The Lord Mayor's Visit 2010

The 73rd Lord Mayor of Cork, councillor Michael O'Connell and his wife Catherine visited Scoil Niocláis on Tuesday 28th of September. He spoke to the children about the history of his job - leading back to the Tudor reign, the significance of the Port of Cork in history and some of the famous Irish patriots who have filled his role as Lord Mayor of Cork. Looking to the future he spoke to the children about the importance of art and culture to the people of Cork. He also spoke about the importance of education in Science and Maths to the future of a smart economy and employment in Cork.

On the 23rd of September Scoil Nioclais took on Castlelyons in a league match .In the first half of the match Castlelyons scored a quick point the shot dropped short but it bounced over our keepers head .With a quick kick out, Scoil Nioclais bounced back with a goal which was set up by mark but finished off by outstanding finish by Adam.
Things were not over yet because Castlelyons came with 2 more points which levelled the game. Things were getting exciting! Scoil Nioclais scored another 4 points which were scored by Cristian, Ross, Aaron and Brian. Brian took his chances well and scored the second goal for Scoil Nioclais.

The score board looked good for Scoil Nioclais as it was 2-4 too 1-3 but just to make it even sweeter Cathal scored a goal for Scoil Nioclais after getting a beautiful pass from Colum. He took a cracking shot at the goal which flew past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net . GOOOOOOOAL!!!!!

In the second half, things seemed to get tougher because Castlelyons bounced back with a goal . After they had scored the goal things got even rougher but when Aaron slotted a smashing goal. That put them back into their box.

If it was not for the defenders Castlelyons would have scored a dozen points. Scoil Nioclais still managed to scrap 2 points more - one by Brian and another by Ross. Castlelyons scored 2 more points but by then there was only a minute left and when the final whistle blew the score was 4-6 too 1-5.

Another tough win for Scoil Niocláis. Now for our next match against Carrignavar on the 5th October.

On the 14th of September Scoil Nioclais had there first Sciath na Scoil match of the new year. It was held in Douglas GAA. We were playing against Scoil Eoin [Innishannon]. Scoil Nioclais started off great. The ball was thrown in and Brian got it, rounded his man and gave a great pass into Adam. Adam caught the ball and scored a great goal. We played the first half very well. Then Mr O’ Donavan blew the whistle to tell us that it was half time.

The second half started and we knew that Scoil Eoin weren’t going to give up. There were a good few more scores in the second half and there was only about 3 minutes left. The clock ticked on and the whistle blew. It was the end of the game! We were all very happy that we won our first match. The final score was Scoil Niocláis 3-7 Scoil Eoin 0-6

On the 14th of September Scoil Niocláis had their first league match against Scoil Eoin (Inashannon). The match was held in Douglas GAA.

The two teams went into their dressing rooms and got ready for the match. The girls went down to the pitch and got warmed up. Then the match began!

Scoil Niocláis had the ball but Scoil Eoin ruined their chance of scoring. Scoil Eoin attacked up the pitch and Scoil Niocláis’ keeper came out to try and stop them but they scored a goal.

Scoil Nioclais’ keeper kicked it out to the midfielders and then they passed the ball to the forwards and Saoirsa ran at the Scoil Eoin keeper and scored a brilliant goal.

Minutes went by and there were many points scored. The half time whistle went. The score was 2-4 to Scoil Eoin and 3-5 to Scoil Nioclais. We had a chat about how we were doing and subs who were coming on and off. Game on!

Scoil Nioclais scorched up the pitch and scored a wonderful point. Scoil Eoin came back with a score of their own. Minutes went by and goals and points were scored. Final whistle went and it was all over!

Scoil Nioclais had won the match. The score was 7-6 to 5-5. It was a match well played!

We are learning to eat better, stay healthy and get 5 a day. As part of this programme we are growing our own fruit and vegetables. We are taking good care of our potatoes, carrots, spinach, lettuce and strawberries. They are coming along nicely.

Memories of fourth class by Ms. O’Mahony’s class.

My favourite memory in 4th class is when I was playing in the basketball tournament, winning all the matches and bringing the cup back to school for a second time.
My second favourite memory is when we made some cool looking hats with vibrant colours. We had a fashion catwalk. It was a laugh seeing all the crazy poses. The presentations were also very different. I loved every one of the hats because they were all very different. I hope 5th class art will be as much fun. by Marie

One of my memories is when we made our own hats and then we had a fashion show. That was great fun.
At Christmas time we made flower arrangements for our Christmas tables at home. My Mom loved it. At Easter time we made really nice Easter cards. At the end of the year, Chika came and taught us the art of origami and how to write my name in Japanese. We will have our school tour in the Mardyke Arena. I am looking forward to that. by Laura

Fourth class started with setting up chairs and tables and our of nowhere there were three new kids – Georgia, Ucha and Alex. They’re funny. My favourite part of 4th class was the Japanese project. I loved Rome too. Fourth had many adventures and I loved most of them. I can remember Halloween in 4th. I’m so sad leaving fourth class. by Cian

One of the best memories that I have would probably be the Japanese workshop. I liked it because we learned lots about Japan and I liked learning about the Japanese culture.
I also liked the Roman project because I learned new things about the Romans that I never knew before. It was very enjoyable. When we were doing our Roman project these men came into the halla dressed in Roman clothing and told us all about life in Ancient Rome. by me!

In my memories, the exciting thing that happened in class was Christmas. On the last day of the holidays, we were doing what we wanted. The funniest thing I ever saw was David in the hat show with his big hat. by Ucha

My happiest memory was when we were drawing our friend’s faces. I was drawing my friend and it was so bad because you were not allowed to lift the pencil off the page and you were not allowed to rub your mistakes out!

One of my favourite memories was doing The Romans. I loved all the art. it was my favourite project. We learned so much about them.
I never knew three new students would come this year. They are all really nice. Their names are Alex, Ucha and Georgia, Ucha’s English is very good because he is not from Ireland.

One of my best memories of 4th class was making the Philip Tracey hats. I loved mine because I put a lot of hard work into it. They were the best art this year.
I also loved the Xmas Factor when the teachers dressed up as High school Musical.
I loved the Japanese work shop. It was really good. I loved all the different lessons. I though it was superb, and the best Geography all year long.
I also loved the Roman project. It was excellent. I loved it because we did different topics each. I really loved my fourth class memories.

The funniest moment was when Cian was doing pastels and got them all over his face. The best moment in 4th class was walking into a new class and meeting new friends and a brilliant new teacher. It was wonderful. My memory was when I found out a teacher from my old school works here in Scoil Nioclais and every day I come in school I can see her and say hello. Every Tuesday a very artistic woman called Chika comes in and teaches us Japanese things. The best things she did with me and the class was probably the Japanese writing. It was so wonderful and DIFFICULT but we got there.

My best memory of 4th class was when we found out there was a girl called Chika coming to us.
Chika was from Japan. She came to teach us Japanese which is the most fun and enjoyable subject EVER!
But yet there still are other memories about 4th class yet to come so hang on in there!
I thoroughly enjoyed the Cork Pops which was in the City Hall. I had been there before but each time I went there was either a different song, different people but there was always something different! by me!

One of the most interesting things that has happened in 4th class is meeting my learning support teacher Mr. Keany. I first met him a while after I came into 4th class. All through 4th class we were doing things like learning how to use Microsoft Word, throwing a ball, idioms and sometimes we even did art! I thought that he was very nice and friendly. We had some nutty adventures and I really hope I have him as a learning support teacher in 5th and 6th class and have some more crazy and nutty adventures! by Conor

The highlight of being in fourth class was making the centre pieces for Christmas. I liked them because they were so beautiful on the kitchen table.
I was amazed to see that we made so many projects during
the year. My favourite project was about the Romans because it was so interesting learning more facts than I knew already.
I was disappointed to see Chika go because after the eight weeks we had, I wish she could have stayed longer.

came to do the art work shop with us because it made me see that everyone was creative. by Mary

My favourite memory from fourth class was when we mae hats because it was fun writing the commentaries and doing the catwalk to the cool music.
I also loved making the Christmas centre pieces with the pretty flowers. The Santa and the candle also made them more unique. They were all beautiful and looked gorgeous on the kitchen table.
Another one of my best memories was when Ms O’Mahony told me that I had a gift for writing stories.

My favourite memory is Ms O’Mahony and Chika too. Its fun when they teach us for me and for you.
Dodge Frisbee is fun too, trying to dodge the things ye throw.
It was fun drawing portraits without lifting the pencil. The faces I drew were funny, how about you?

The Roman history and Egypt too, I bet you wish you were doing it too.
When someone says “I’m done” Ms O’Mahony says “finished” that’s the way she is, trying to get us to speak proper English! by me!

I loved the Romans because the culture, games and war were interesting. I like the gladiators and the chariot racing. They were brilliant. It was so much fun.
We also did Egyptian masks. They were fantastic. They were very easy to make. You get a plastic mask and cover it with Vaseline and plaster of paris then you paint it you get cardboard and paint it as well. by Eoin

I liked doing the project on the Romans because they were really interesting and they always had really clever ideas for everything
Although the poor people didn’t have very good lives I thought
It was really interesting where they lived and what they ate!!! When the Romans came we had a lot of fun.

And the marbling with acrylic oil paints was awesome. We also did Paul Cezanne style still life pictures. Ms O Mahony always has something fun to do in art!!!
I thought that when we played dodge Frisbee for P.E. it was awesome because I liked playing it with my friends.
But the best was when we had Japanese culture lessons with Chika Ueda we made lovely origami, koinobori (wishing carp) and beautiful Daruma Dolls.

I loved doing the Italian project because I love learning about other countries and the people in them.
The surprising memory this year was when I found out that there were three new children in my class, because I never would have expected that to happen.
The Japanese workshop was the happy memory because I enjoyed learning and making things from Japan.
The funny memory this year was when my teacher overheard my friend and I talking about our favourite teacher!! by me!

I have a lot of memories about fourth class but my favourite memory was the first day of school and three new people joined our class group. We made great friends with each other.
My funniest memory I have is when Dave Scott told the class really funny jokes. He is one funny friend and his jokes were always hilarious.
The other good memories of 4th class are the roman project, the energy project and I think it will be our school tour.
I really enjoyed my time in 4th class and I hope 5th class will just as good!

6th Class Confirmation

On Wednesday 21st April, 6th Class in Scoil Niocláis made their Confirmation. We were very lucky with the weather, for on that day the sun was shining down on us. When we reached the church everyone was in their new clothes and they looked lovely. We were honoured to have Bishop Buckley celebrating the mass and confirming us on our special day. The ceremony was lovely and very prayerful. It was made even more special with our family and friends around us. The 5th and 6th choir also sang beautifully and all of our preparation and practice really showed. After the mass some people went to restaurants and had parties with their families who might have travelled a lot to come and celebrate our day with us. All together the day was a great success and on behalf on all of 6th class we would like to give a big thank you to all the teachers involved!

The three third classes held a Science Day in the halla to show 1st and 2nd class and their parents the exciting experiments they have been doing as part of the Discover Primary Science programme. Experiments on the day included balloon rockets, dancing raisins, paper helicopters, fingerprints and more. Well done to all the budding scientists in third class!

Scoil Niocláis Swept The Boards at the Swimming Gala!!

Well done to all the pupils who took part in the Northside Swimming Gala in March!
Twenty students from first class to sixth class did Scoil Niocláis proud at the swimming gala. Each student won a medal, with many taking home two or three medals, ranging from bronze to gold.

Children took part from five different schools from Cork. The children opened the gala by parading around the pool, school flag held high and finishing with the National Anthem. A win in the very first race of the gala got us off to a great start. It got better and better from there, with every swimmer doing their very best and reaping the rewards for their great efforts. Plates were awarded for winning Sections A,B and C of the event, the children achieved first place in the relays and to top it off their effort as a team was awarded by adding up all the points gained throughout the day and they were presented with the much sought after Overall Winners Plate!! The under 8s and under 9s did really well in what was their first Gala for some, to achieve the positions they did in the races and gain the very important points to achieve this Overall Awrad. So a special thanks to them.

A very special thank you also to Fiona O’Callaghan who managed the team so well on the day and during preparations. Thank also to Ms. Hipwell for all her help on the day of the gala.

Well done again to all the swimmers who took part for their excellent behaviour and speedy swimming!!

Our Daffodils
At the end of April, we went to admire our beautiful daffodils. We planted these ourselves earlier this year.

Sports Day
We really enjoyed our first annual Sports Day. We had a wonderful time playing the different games together!

Mobile Farm
The mobile Farm came to visit in May. We had a great time looking at and holding the different farm animals. Our favourites were the baby chicks and the rabbits.

Drawing Outside
During the beautiful weather in May, we even took our Art lessons outside. We drew great pictures of our school in the sunshine.

Japan comes to Scoil Nioclais!!

Fourth classes are taking part in an eight week programme featuring classes in Japanese culture, origami, traditional arts and crafts and brush calligraphy offered by Triskel arts Centre, cork.

Fourth class followed an 8 week course in Japanese art, origami, culture and language, given by Chika Ueda from the Triskel Arts Centre. We loved learning about Japan and all of the art activities.

We made stunning daruma dolls. They are Japanese dolls made by sticking newspaper bits onto a balloon. It was great fun. My favourite part was painting it. I called mine daffodil. by Ester

In the Japanese workshop we made daruma dolls. We had a terrific time making them. It is traditional to make a wish while making the doll. It is also traditional to put one eye on but I decided to put two on mine.

We have been really busy over the last few weeks as our tomatoes; peas and basil have all been growing really well. The recent spell of good weather has resulted in great growing conditions and we expect to have a bumper crop of vegetables and herbs this year.

Ahhhhh ! King Tut has awakened!

Gold and blue – the colours of King Tut. Ms. O’Mahony’s 4th class created beautiful Egyptian masks. Truly amazing, all are unique. Just look below and see each and every one !!! Rachel

Ancient Egypt returns!
Ancient Egypt has returned to Ms. O’Mahony’s 4th class, We have made these gorgeous masks from plaster of paris and painted them with royal blue and a shimmering gold on a background of cardboard. They’re so amazing, they really do look like King Tut’s death mask!

I feel like a pharaoh!

We made probably the coolest masks ever! My mask was legendary!
We first covered the mask in Vaseline and stuck plaster of paris on. Then we put a backing on. We painted it in metallic gold and royal blue and we were finished.
